Florida leads
the nation with 17.4 percent of our population 65 years and
older compared to 12.8 percent for the United States. The
number of older residents will continue to grow and Florida
will remain number 1 with 27.1 percent of our population
projected to be 65+ in 2030, compared to 19.7 percent for the
rest of the nation (U.S. Census Bureau).
Florida is also
leading the nation in preparations for these changes with
implementation of programs and resources such as this Web
site. The Safe and Mobile Seniors Web site is a
virtual "one stop shop" for all transportation safety and
mobility information for drivers and pedestrians 65 years and
older living in Florida. Developed through the
Florida Department of
Transportation's (FDOT) mature driver program "Safe Mobility
for Life" with assistance from program partners,
this site provides Floridians information and resources on
every aspect of transportation, in an effort to improve the
safety, access and mobility of Florida's growing aging
population.
Bookmark this
site and use it as a reference to stay connected to the latest
transportation safety and mobility resources and information.
FDOT has made a commitment to keep the information on this Web
site current and easily accessible while also providing a
location where agencies and organizations can provide updates
on their own transportation related programs and activities
aimed at seniors. To assist in this effort, the site is
updated monthly with new
features and/or information is posted below.
What's
New This Month:
-
NHTSA's Traffic Safety Facts - 2008
on the Older Population is posted on the
Road
User page.
-
A bookmark to safety features for
mature drivers, along with a video from the Today Show,
has been added to the
Vehicle page.
