Improving Safety and Mobility for Florida's Aging Road Users
Florida leads the nation with over 17 percent of our population 65 years and older. Our sunny warm climate makes Florida an ideal retirement destination.
It is projected that the number of residents 65 years and older will continue to grow. By the year 2030, over 27 percent of our population will be over the age of 65, compared to 19 percent for the rest of the nation. (U.S. Census Bureau).
Florida is also leading the nation in preparing to meet the transportation safety and mobility challenges that arise from the increase to the aging population. This website was developed and is maintained by the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) to support the work and efforts of our Safe Mobility for Life Coalition. This site is designed to be a virtual "one stop shop" for transportation safety and mobility information to benefit Florida's aging road users.
What is an Aging Road User? Our Coalition defines an aging road user to include: drivers, passengers, pedestrians, bicyclists, transit-riders, motorcyclists, and operators of non-motorized vehicles that are 50 years of age and older, with a special emphasis on the 65 year and older age group.
The resources on this site are designed to help everyone interested in improving the safety and mobility of Florida's aging road users. Our Coalition believes that in order to reduce crashes involving aging road users, we need to improve their safety, access, and mobility. Whether you are an older adult, family member (living in or out of Florida), friend, caregiver, health care professional, aging or safety advocates, law enforcement agency, planner, engineer, or you just want to learn more about how aging can affect your safe driving, you should find what you need right here.
We encourage you to bookmark this site and use it as a reference to stay connected to the latest transportation safety and mobility resources and information available in Florida. FDOT has made a commitment to keep the information on this website current and easily accessible. To assist in this effort, the site is frequently updated with new information and/or resources as it becomes available.
If you know of any transportation safety or mobility resources that should be included on our site, please contact: Gail Holley, FDOT Safe Mobility for Life Program Manager.
