Older Driver Safety Awareness Week

December 15, 2014

The American Occupational Therapy Association, Inc. (AOTA) establishes the first week in December as Older Driver Safety Awareness Week to promote the importance of older driver safety and mobility that helps ensure older adults remain active within their communities.

The Safe Mobility for Life Coalition endorses and supports AOTA's national efforts by conducting and promoting older driver safety awareness and educational events throughout the state. Throughout the week, each day will focus on a different aspect of safety and mobility for aging drivers:

Monday: Identifying Changes That Can Affect Driving
Tuesday: Family Conversations
Wednesday: Screening and Evaluations With an Occupational Therapist
Thursday: Equipment That Can Empower Drivers
Friday: Taking Changes in Stride

Outreach and Education
Raising awareness and providing education about the work of the Safe Mobility for Life Coalition and available transportation safety and mobility resources here in Florida is our number one goal this week! This is being accomplished in a variety of ways:

Safety is Golden Mobility Fair

This year, in support of Older Driver Safety Awareness week, we have partnered with the City of St. Petersburg, FDOT, and CarFit to bring our Safety is Golden Mobility Fair to the Sunshine Center. This free, interactive safety event allows participants to learn about their local and state transportation resources by visiting indoor vendors and also be able to participate in the CarFit safety event that will going on at the same time outdoors. More details on the event can be found on the Safety is Golden Mobility Fair poster.

If you are in the St. Petersburg/Pinellas County area, please join us on:

Friday, December 5, 2014
9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.
Sunshine Center
330 5th Street North
St. Petersburg, FL  33701

To make sure we have enough trained technicians, we ask that participants register for the CarFit safety event, by calling 727-893-7190.
