December 1–7, 2013
The American Occupational Therapy Association, Inc. (AOTA) establishes the first week in December as Older Driver Safety Awareness Week to promote the importance of older driver safety and mobility that helps ensure older adults remain active within their communities.
The Safe Mobility for Life Coalition endorses and supports AOTA's national efforts by conducting and promoting older driver safety awareness and educational events throughout the state. We use this webpage to post all the activities that will take place right here in Florida to help promote safety and mobility including CarFit Events, community events, and the Coalition's first Safety is Golden Mobility Fair.
Governor's Proclamation: On November 25, 2013 Governor Rick Scott signed a proclamation establishing the first week in December to be Older Driver Safety Awareness Week here in Florida and encourages everyone to help reduce injuries and tragic loss of life by being proactive about safe driving skills and learn how to maintain quality of life after driving cessation. You can read the entire 2013 Older Driver Safety Awareness Week Proclamation here.
Local and Statewide Outreach: Raising awareness and providing access to transportation safety and mobility resources is our number one goal this week! This is being accomplished both locally and statewide in a variety of ways:
- FDOT Press Release
- DHSMV Newsletter Article
- Safety Tip messages being displayed on monitors in rest areas, welcome centers, turnpike service plazas and driver license offices throughout the state.
- Rotating banner on FDOT website
- Twitter and Facebook safety and mobility tips and messages
- TCPalm Letter to the Editor by Wendy Starnes, Genesis Rehab
- Elder Update Article
- Senior Driving is Florida's Focus This Week, Sunshine State News
- WCTV, Tallahassee
